Welcome to the blog! If you’ve landed on this page, you’re likely in one of three categories: you’re a long-time reader who clicked the wrong link, you’re my mother (hi, Mum!), or—most likely—you’re someone who looked at your bank account recently and thought, "There simply has to be a better way than hoping for a Toto windfall or waiting for my CPF to magically multiply."
Whichever category you fall into, welcome to Real Value SG. Pull up a virtual plastic kopitiam chair, grab a metaphorical kopi-o kosong, and let’s talk about money, life, and the relentless pursuit of not going entirely broke in one of the most expensive cities on earth.
The Elephant in the Room (And Why We Are Different)
Let’s be brutally honest for a second. The internet is absolutely saturated with "finance gurus" trying to sell you the dream. You know the type: they stand in front of a rented Lamborghini, pointing at a squiggly chart, promising that if you just buy their $3,999 "Masterclass," you’ll be day-trading your way to a Sentosa Cove bungalow by next Tuesday.
That is not what we do here.
At Real Value SG, there are no secret formulas, no guaranteed 500% returns, and definitely no rented supercars. We are retail investors navigating the reality of the Singaporean financial landscape. We know that building wealth isn't about making one lucky gamble on a meme coin featuring a picture of a dog. It’s about patience, emotional discipline, and a borderline-obsessive dedication to finding, well, real value.
Living in Singapore is fantastic, but it is undeniably expensive. We live in a city where ordering fish at the cai png (mixed rice) stall is considered a luxury, and buying a family car means you’re essentially funding the nation-building of a small republic. The traditional Singaporean dream of the "5Cs" (Cash, Car, Credit Card, Condominium, Country Club) has evolved. Today, it’s more about the modern 5Cs: CPF optimization, Compound interest, Cashflow, Capital preservation, and Coffee (because we need the caffeine to survive earnings season).
Where We’ve Been: The Story So Far
If you take a stroll through the archives of this blog, you’ll see the evolution of our journey. We’ve covered a lot of ground. We have:
- Dissected company fundamentals and annual reports until our eyes bled, looking for hidden gems hiding in plain sight.
- Talked extensively about REITs, dividend investing, and building a portfolio that actually pays you while you sleep.
- Commiserated over market dips, corrections, and those agonizing days when the portfolio bleeds red, reminding ourselves why holding strong companies is the only way to survive the emotional rollercoaster.
- Broken down the nitty-gritty of local real estate and whether upgrading your HDB to a private condo is actually a solid financial move, or just a very expensive flex for Chinese New Year family gatherings.
Through all the market noise, the core philosophy has remained exactly the same: Price is what you pay; value is what you get. We look for businesses that generate real cash, possess solid moats, and are run by management teams that actually care about shareholder returns.
Where We Are Going: The Future Trajectory
But the world is changing, and so is this blog. The financial playbook that worked seamlessly in 2015 doesn't necessarily work today. As we look to the future, Real Value SG is expanding its horizons.
Moving forward, you can expect us to dive deeper into:
- Surviving the New Macro Normal: We are navigating a world of sticky inflation and shifting interest rates. We’ll be exploring how to protect our purchasing power when the cost of a bowl of bak chor mee seems to rise every six months.
- Global Diversification: Singapore is our home, but the SGX isn't the only game in town. We will increasingly look at how to safely find value beyond our borders without getting eaten alive by withholding taxes and currency fluctuations.
- The Nuances of FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early): The global FIRE movement is great, but retiring to an off-grid cabin in the woods doesn't really translate well to living in Yishun. We’ll be tailoring the concepts of financial independence to the unique realities of the Singaporean system.
- The Psychology of Wealth: Money is just math; investing is deeply emotional. We will spend more time unpacking our own psychological biases—why we panic sell, why we FOMO buy, and how to build a mindset that lets us sleep peacefully at night regardless of what the S&P 500 or Straits Times Index did that day.
The "Kampung" Spirit: Let’s Learn Together
Now, here is the most important part of this introduction: I do not know everything.
In fact, the market frequently humbles me. I have bought value traps. I have sold winners too early. I have made calculations that turned out to be completely wrong. And I document those mistakes here so you don’t have to repeat them.
But the true value of Real Value SG isn't just in the articles I write—it’s in the community we are building. The comments section of this blog is where the real magic happens. This isn't a one-way lecture; it’s a virtual roundtable, and there is an empty seat waiting for you.
I want to invite you to be an active part of this community. When you read a post, don’t just close the tab. Jump into the comments!
- Challenge my thesis. If you think my analysis of a particular stock is fundamentally flawed, tell me why. I promise my ego can take it.
- Share your own finds. Spotted an undervalued counter that nobody is talking about? Drop it in the comments so we can all investigate.
- Ask the "stupid" questions. If you don't understand a financial term or a concept I've written about, ask. I guarantee you that fifty other readers are wondering the exact same thing but were too shy to speak up.
When one of us uncovers a brilliant insight, we all benefit. When one of us makes an unforced error, we can all learn from it (and maybe laugh a little—respectfully, of course). We are all retail investors swimming with institutional sharks; our greatest advantage is crowdsourcing our knowledge and relying on each other.
