For years, my wife and I have watched the National Day Parade on television, promising ourselves that "one day" we would be there in person. This year, "one day" finally arrived. We were lucky enough to get tickets to the second preview, and with our six-year-old daughter and four-year-old son in tow, we embarked on what would become one of our most cherished family memories.
The excitement was palpable from the moment we left our home. The sea of red and white on the MRT was a sight to behold, a beautiful display of unity and anticipation. Our children, decked out in their national colours, were buzzing with an energy that was infectious. For them, this wasn't just a parade; it was a grand adventure.
Arriving at the Padang was an experience in itself. The sheer scale of the event, the buzz of the crowd, and the impressive stage setup left us in awe. Finding our seats, we were handed our funpacks, which the kids immediately delved into with wide-eyed wonder. The temporary tattoos were an instant hit, and soon enough, all four of us were sporting the national flag on our cheeks.
The parade began, and from the very first moment, we were captivated. The precision of the marching contingents, the resounding boom of the presidential gun salute, and the majestic fly-past of the Republic of Singapore Air Force jets had us all looking to the skies with a sense of pride. My son, usually a bundle of boundless energy, sat mesmerized, his little finger pointing at every plane that streaked across the sky.
A collective gasp swept through the crowd as the Red Lions made their spectacular descent. Watching them freefall from the sky, landing with pinpoint accuracy, was a heart-stopping moment. My daughter squeezed my hand, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and excitement. It was a powerful reminder of the skill and dedication of our armed forces.
The show segment was a vibrant explosion of colour, music, and dance. The performances told the story of Singapore, our journey, our struggles, and our triumphs. The catchy songs had everyone on their feet, waving their flags and singing along. Seeing the joy on our children's faces as they danced to the familiar tunes was a priceless moment.
As dusk settled and the city lights began to twinkle, the parade culminated in a breathtaking fireworks display. The sky erupted in a kaleidoscope of colours, each explosion met with cheers and applause from the crowd. In that moment, surrounded by thousands of fellow Singaporeans, a profound sense of belonging washed over me.
Attending the National Day Parade preview was more than just watching a show. It was about sharing a collective experience, celebrating our nation's progress, and creating lasting memories with my family. As we made our way home, tired but incredibly happy, my daughter turned to me and said, "Daddy, can we come back next year?" I smiled and hoped that this was the start of a new family tradition
